Chapter 1

“I…I…” Kumiko stammered. Her eyes flitted around the classroom anxiously. As usual, Takegawa High School’s class 2-D was buzzing with activity. Girls putting make-up and gossiping, guys fooling around…well, just your normal high school.

“Come on Kumi-chan!” Yui closed in on her. “It’s okay to tell me you know,” she winked. “I am your best friend after all.” Yui gave her a sly look as she tilted her chair forward. “Well? Come on!” She broke into a grin.

Kumiko’s eyes flitted around once more. It’s noisy in the classroom, I guess it’s okay…no one will hear me. She drew in a deep breath. “I…I…I like…Re…”

“Morning!” Rei burst through the doors of the classroom. “Am I late?”

Everyone froze, turning their heads toward the door, and almost a split second later, nearly everyone in the class was gathered around Rei, like bears to honey. Kumiko’s eyes stopped flitting around, her eyes fixed on the crowd.

Yui glanced at the crowd and gave a knowing smile. “The usual routine I see. Geez, Kumi-chan, you shouldn’t be so startled by…” Yui turned to see Kumiko’s eyes. A film came over Yui’s eyes. “Kumi-chan…the one you like…is it…”

Kumiko snapped out of her world. She turned, blood rushing to her cheeks. Bowing her head as her face continued to colour, she nodded softly. “Yeah. It’s Rei…” From there, Kumiko slowly looked up. Yui had her eyes fixed on her; a glassy stare. Kumiko slowly started to fidget as Yui remained her stare for 2 minutes.

“Yu…i?” Kumiko called unsteadily. She moved in closer to Yui’s face, crimson slowly ebbing away from her face. “Are you al…”

The film across her eyes finally disappeared. Yui smiled a sunflower smile and showed her teeth. “That’s great isn’t it?” She grinned, slapping Kumiko on the back. Kumiko gasped, falling forward onto her desk from the force of the hit. She glanced upwards. Yui changed her position on the chair and leant back. She stretched her hands upwards and folded her arms behind her head.

“Spring time has come for you huh, Kumi?” Yui raised her head so Kumiko could see her eye. She winked as Kumiko flushed another crimson.

“Stop it, Yui…”

“Morning!” Kumiko and Yui turned around to see Rei lowering himself into his seat. He flipped his hair. “Stop what?”

Kumiko’s eyes widened; Yui whipped around. Kumiko turned redder than a tomato and she dropped her head in fear. “Did…did…did you hear that…”

Rei faced her, his hair blowing gently in the breeze; eyes sparkling in the sunlight. “Hear what?” his eyes widened.

“No…nothing…” The corners of her mouth curled up a little as her face slowly returned to its normal colour. She breathed out the breath she did not know she was holding.

Yui stared at Kumiko with a glassy look again. Her face was expressionless, eyes unfocused and blank. You have crossed the line.
